Developing Strategic Architecture Through Scenario Planning

While working on two papers on the service oriented architecture and solution architecture, I have been thinking about how scenario planning and enterprise architecture could be combined in order to develop a better framework for strategic planning in organizations. That is one of the reasons why I have been working with a literature review exploring the various options of how to combine the two concepts through the role of the enterprise architect, and how the enterprise architect can deal with the two.

Bernard (2012) suggested that the enterprise architect could engage the various decision makers of the enterprise in order to facilitate and document the scenarios of which a business strategy. The enterprise architect can through the inputs from the strategy develop a new business architecture for the business. I believe that the business architecture is the framework for how the business can ensure execution of its strategy through projects and through business processes. Nevertheless, I will explore the topics further, while I am writing on the papers.

Two papers on Service-oriented Architecture

The first paper will be based upon a literature review, where I will make use of various sources on service-oriented architecture. SOA was on the pinnacle on the hype cycle a few years ago, but it has changed since and to some extent it has proven to be an architectural pattern that can be used efficiently when using organisational and in particular technical matters. In recent times the concept of micro-services has attracted a lot of attention by consultancies and conferences e.g. GOTO Copenhagen among others.

Also, I have been thinking about writing a paper regarding the implementation of a service-oriented architecture. This particular paper will be based on participatory observations.

Please let me know, if you find these to papers interesting. I can be contacted at:

Open Source Enterprise Architecture

I have chosen to write a draft for a paper dealing with the idea an concept of open source enterprise architecture.

The project will be initiated with the first paper. The paper will be based on a literature review. The literature review will include the following concepts and theories:

  1. Enterprise Architecture.
  2. Crowd-sourcing and open innovation.
  3. Management 2.0.
  4. Information systems theory.
  5. Systems thinking.

While I am dealing with these five concepts I will applying the hermeneutical circle. The hermeneutical is based upon the idea that the analyst would have to deal with his own hypothesis and assumptions on what the theory and texts deals with, but he should deal with the meaning of the sections of each of the selected texts and for that matter deal with the meaning of the whole texts in their context (time, culture, and history)

The analyst can go on, when he has an idea on the quality of the out come (analysis) e.g. if it is mature enough to go for making conclusions.

The approach has been illustrated below.
